Chef Michael Smith TV Special Wins International Broadcast Media Award

Charlottetown – (May 8, 2002) – Cellar Door Productions is pleased to announce that its successful Food/Documentary Special ‘Saturday Night, A Day in the Night of Chef Michael Smith’ has been awarded the Broadcast Media Award for ‘Best National Television Cooking Show or Special’ during the James Beard Awards held in New York City on May 6, 2002.

The program, which was co co-produced with Ocean Entertainment (Halifax), is a suspense filled one-hour documentary special that examines what it takes to be a world-class chef by looking at a day in the life of Chef Michael Smith.

Often called "the Oscars” of the food world, the annual James Beard Foundation Awards are the food worlds biggest award honors. More than 500 food and beverage industry professionals in the U.S. vote by confidential ballot for the nominees and winners of The James Beard Foundation Awards. Award winners receive a bronze medallion engraved with the image of James Beard, the late journalist, cookbook author, chef and cooking teacher. The Awards ceremony, are televised live from NY on the first Monday in May, and honor the finest chefs, restaurants, journalists, cookbook authors, restaurant designers, and electronic media professionals in North America. It culminates in a reception featuring a tasting of the signature dishes of more than 30 of the very best chefs from around the world.

“This is the most significant milestone of my career to date!” said Chef Michael. “I am tremendously honoured to represent Canada by accepting this prestigious award at an international event of this calibre.”

“This is the first Canadian production to be given this award”, stated Johanna Elliot Ocean Entertainment’s President and co-executive producer of the special. “The success of ‘Saturday Night’ proves that if you bring together the power of a great story with fascinating people in real life situations, a first class television production can be developed anywhere in the world”, added Gretha Rose, Cellar Door’s President and the specials co-executive producer.

Saturday Night is one of four television productions produced by Cellar Door Productions that feature Chef Michael Smith. The original program is a 65 episode series entitled ‘The Inn Chef’, which airs on Food Network in Canada, on Foxtel in Australia and will begin airing in Italy, New Zealand and Portugal later this year. The Inn Chef was so successful that it was followed by two (2) one-hour Food/Documentary specials entitled ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘Mountain Magic’ and a new series entitled ‘Chef at Large’, with the first 13 episodes premiering on Food Network Canada in January of this year and the next 13 currently in production.
