![]() March 20, 2002 Chef Michael Smith Special Nominated for Prestigious James Beard Award ‘ Best National Television Cooking Show or Special’ Chef Michael Smith Special Nominated for Prestigious James Beard Award ‘ Best National Television Cooking Show or Special’ Among those nominated for Broadcast Media Awards are Martha Stewart, Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck For Immediate Release Charlottetown – (March 20, 2002) – Cellar Door Productions is pleased to announce that its successful Food/Documentary Special ‘Saturday Night, A Day in the Night of Chef Michael Smith’ has been nominated for a prominent Broadcast Media Award to be presented by the prestigious James Beard Foundation in New York on May 6th. This documentary special has been selected along with three other programs as a nominee for the prestigious ‘Best National Television Cooking Show or Special’. The program, which was co-produced with Ocean Entertainment (Halifax), is a suspense filled one-hour special that examines what it takes to be a world-class chef by looking at a day in the life of Chef Michael Smith. In this special, the audience finds out what it takes to run one of Canada’s most progressive restaurants by following Chef Michael and his 'Team Cuisine' from the moment he wakes up, through to the late hours of Saturday night. Often called "the Oscars” of the food world, the annual James Beard Foundation Awards are the food worlds biggest award honors and are held as part of a fortnight of activities that celebrate fine cuisine and Beard's birthday. The Awards ceremony, are televised live from NY on the first Monday in May, and honor the finest chefs, restaurants, journalists, cookbook authors, restaurant designers, and electronic media professionals in North America. It culminates in a reception featuring a tasting of the signature dishes of more than 30 of the very best chefs from around the world. “I’m blown away!” said Chef Michael. “I’ve been very fortunate and enjoyed a lot of amazing experiences in my career but this one takes the cake, I’m tremendously honoured to represent Canada on this world class stage.” “We are very excited about this nomination”, stated Gretha Rose, Cellar Door’s President. “This recognition for ‘Saturday Night’ clearly indicates the continued popularity and success of the Chef Michael Smith series of Food/Adventure programs”. Saturday Night is one of four television productions featuring Chef Michael Smith. The original program is a 65 episode series entitled ‘The Inn Chef’, which airs on Food Network in Canada, on Foxtel in Australia and will begin airing in Italy and Portugal later this year. The Inn Chef was so successful that it was followed by two (2) I hour Food/Documentary specials entitled ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘Mountain Magic’ and a new series entitled ‘Chef at Large’, with the first 13 episodes premiering on Food Network Canada in January of this year and the next 13 currently in production.
